What is Malaria?

Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites, primarily Plasmodium, transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes. The symptoms of malaria can include high fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue, often leading to severe complications if not treated promptly. Malaria is most commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions, making it vital for travellers to take preventive steps before visiting these areas.

By using antimalarials such as Malarone, Doxycycline, and Mefloquine, you can significantly reduce your risk of contracting the disease. Additionally, employing other preventive measures like mosquito nets and bite prevention strategies can further protect you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you buy malaria tablets at a pharmacy?

Yes, malaria tablets are available at pharmacies, but they typically require a prescription. At Wheatley Pharmacy, we are an expert Travel Health Clinic, meaning we offer a comprehensive travel health service. You can consult with one of our expert pharmacists, who will assess your travel plans and recommend the appropriate antimalarial medication. You can then purchase the tablets directly from the pharmacy.

What are the antimalarial drugs?

Antimalarial drugs are medications used to prevent or treat malaria, a disease transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes. Common antimalarials include Malarone, Generic Malarone, Doxycycline, and Mefloquine. These medications work by preventing the malaria parasite from multiplying in the body. The type of drug prescribed will depend on factors such as your destination, health status, and potential resistance to specific medications in certain regions.

How do I know what antimalarials to take?

The type of antimalarial medication you need depends on your destination, any known resistance to certain antimalarial drugs in that region, and your personal medical history. A healthcare provider or pharmacist will help determine the best antimalarial for you based on these factors. It’s important to follow their advice to ensure effective protection.

How many days before travel should I take malaria tablets?

The timing of when to start taking malaria tablets varies depending on the medication prescribed. For example, Malarone is typically taken one to two days before entering a malaria-risk area, while Doxycycline should be started one to two days before travel. Your healthcare provider or pharmacist will provide specific guidance based on the medication you're prescribed.

Are malaria tablets worth it?

Yes, malaria tablets are highly recommended for anyone travelling to areas where malaria is prevalent. They significantly reduce the risk of contracting the disease, which can be life-threatening if untreated, let alone cause difficulties during your trip. While some people may experience mild side effects, it’s quite simply not worth the risk as malaria can be fatal if not diagnosed and treated quickly. Severe complications of malaria can occur within hours or days of the first symptoms. If you do believe you have been infected by malaria, it’s important to follow the ‘Diagnosis and Prompt Treatment’ step of the ABCD approach and seek medical treatment immediately.

What are the symptoms of malaria?

The HPV vaccine is safe and generally well-tolerated. Common side effects are mild and short-lived. They can include swelling or pain where the injection was given, a headache, feeling dizzy, tiredness, a high temperature, and feeling sick. More serious side effects, such as severe allergic reactions, are extremely rare, and the healthcare professional administering the vaccine at Wheatley Pharmacy is trained to handle such situations.
