Why You Should Get a Whooping Cough Vaccine
What is HPV?
HPV (human papillomavirus) is a common virus that is spread through skin contact (usually through sex). Although most people will be infected with HPV at some point in their lives and not show symptoms, in some cases it can lead to a variety of serious health issues. These include: genital warts and cancers such as cervical, anal, and throat cancers, making it essential to protect yourself through vaccination. All children aged 12 to 13 are offered the vaccination on the NHS, but we offer the vaccination to anyone between the ages of 9-45.
The HPV vaccine is highly effective at preventing infection from the most harmful strains of the virus. At Wheatley Pharmacy in Oxford, we use Gardasil 9, which protects you from the two most common high-risk strains (HPV types 16 and 18) as well as less common high-risk strains of the virus.

Frequently Asked Questions
How to get the HPV vaccine?
You can get the HPV vaccine by booking an appointment with us. We offer the highly effective Gardasil 9 vaccine as part of our private vaccination service. The vaccine is given as an injection into your arm, and the number of doses depends on your age and health condition.
Do you offer a private HPV vaccine?
Yes, we offer a private HPV vaccination service in Oxford. This service is available to both men and women between the ages of 9 and 45. Depending on your age and health status, you may need 1 to 3 doses of the vaccine. The vaccine provides protection against the most common types of HPV that cause cervical, anal, and other types of cancers, as well as genital warts.
How do you catch HPV?
HPV is mainly spread through skin-to-skin sexual contact. It can be transmitted through vaginal, anal, and oral sex, as well as other forms of sexual skin contact. Although less common, it is possible for HPV to be transmitted through contact with infected objects. In rare cases, the virus can also be passed from a mother to her baby during childbirth.
Who is most at risk of HPV?
Anyone who is sexually active can catch HPV. People with multiple sexual partners, or those whose partners have had multiple partners, are at a higher risk. Individuals with weakened immune systems are also more susceptible to HPV infection.
What are the HPV Vaccine side effects?
The HPV vaccine is safe and generally well-tolerated. Common side effects are mild and short-lived. They can include swelling or pain where the injection was given, a headache, feeling dizzy, tiredness, a high temperature, and feeling sick. More serious side effects, such as severe allergic reactions, are extremely rare, and the healthcare professional administering the vaccine at Wheatley Pharmacy is trained to handle such situations.
Is there an HPV vaccine for men?
The Gardasil 9 HPV vaccine is suitable for men under the age of 45. It is particularly recommended for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, as they are at a higher risk of HPV-related conditions. Men who attend sexual health or HIV clinics are also eligible for the vaccine until their 45th birthday.
What does the HPV vaccination protect against?
The HPV vaccine protects against the most common types of human papillomavirus that cause cervical, anal, penile, and oral cancers, as well as genital warts. Vaccination is a highly effective way to prevent these HPV-related diseases and conditions.
Can I book the HPV vaccine for other people?
Yes, you can book the HPV vaccine for others, such as family members or partners, as long as they meet the eligibility criteria.
Who cannot have the HPV vaccination?
The HPV vaccine is not suitable for people who have had a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to a previous dose of the vaccine or to any of the ingredients in the vaccine. Additionally, those who are pregnant or have a high fever on the day of their appointment should delay getting the vaccine until they are eligible.
